The Photophonograph is based on the phonograph's ability to translate a physical texture into sound, and on the Epicurean conception of vision as tactile. It transposes the visual texture of any jpeg image into sound, pixel by pixel, as the darkness, warmth, and intensity of color control pitch, length, and loudness of notes on the western musical scale. As one "plays" the instrument with the cursor, scratches are registered on the image itself - the image decays as it is translated across senses. In its employment depicted here, I refer to the tendency for new media technologies to be re-deployed in an effort to confirm prejudices: deployed in jest as a physiognomic tool, the Photophonograph raises the question of what "good" and "evil" really sound like.
